Liverpool penalty and Hamza Choudhury yellow right decisions – Ref Watch
Liverpool punishment and Hamza Choudhury card for a handle on Mohamed Salah were both correct decisions, Dermot Gallagher has stated on Ref Watch.
The prior Premier League referee cast his expert eye on the weekends action, in which VAR once again played its part, also gave his opinions on some of the big decisions…
INCIDENT: At the final minutes of the game, Liverpool were awarded a penalty following Mark Albrighton caught the foot of Sadio Mane in the area, sending the forward over. Referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot and means of a VAR review confirmed the conclusion. Win the game for Liverpool and james Milner awakened to convert the spot-kick.
The VERDICT choice of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:We speak about it because of how Mane went down, he didnt go down too well, but I believe it is a foul and after you provide a filthy, you need to give a punishment. The difficulty we have is that we discuss minimal contact and going down theatricallythat he can do that, but I do think he had been fouled.
INCIDENT: Just prior to the punishment, Mohamed Salah was hacked by Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury because he drove towards the box. Even though he has not suffered any significant damage while the field limped off choudhury has been given a yellow card.
Klopp said following the game:I stand here and ought to be just happy because of the way the boys did this, but I cannot get over the Choudhury yellow card. He should know. He perhaps was unlucky with (Matt) Ritchie, but he must calm down. You cant just opt for the man, a yellow card.
The VERDICT: Correct choice of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:I dont think he even catches him with his boot. It is a challenge and if you take a look at it, then he catches him . Hes low, hes come a short space and Salah is going away from him it isnt the speed and strength of hitting the bloke straight on, so I believe its a card.
INCIDENT: There was just yet an additional late VAR call at the London Stadium. Jordan Ayew scored in the 87th minute, for offside, but the linesman originally ruled it out. The conclusion moved to VAR which showed Martin Kelly – that helped the target – and Ayew were both onside, awarding Crystal Palace that the goal and overturning the phone.
DERMOTS VERDICT: Correct choice.
DERMOT SAYS:Its an amazing decision, since there were two. Theres the first one where Angelo Ogbonna retains because he heads it back on, Martin Kelly onside. Ryan Fredericks retains Jordan Ayew onside.
People say to me in regards to the timeframe [of their VAR test ], which was just two minutes, however you only have to look at it to determine how tight of a call it is and they had to build this up. You can see theyve taken time and they have it correctly. You would rather take the time to get it right than look now and find it ought to have remained disallowed.
INCIDENT in the game, Crystal Palace had been given a penalty after the ball hit Declan Rices large arm in the region. Patrick van Aanholt converted into equalise for the people.
DERMOTS VERDICT: Correct decision.
DERMOT SAYS:It was really close but his [Rices] hands are over his head and at the pre-season advice that is what was stated – if you set your hands over your head, its not a natural place.
You can see that his hands are far above his head when he manages the ball and it was stated that referees would give penalties for this and he also did. It was also checked by VAR and given the OK.
INCIDENT: Everton defender Seamus Coleman was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. The very first foul has been a battle on Erik Pieters and the second for leaping into Dwight McNeil in a challenge.
DERMOTS VERDICT: First was a reddish but second was a yellowish.
DERMOT SAYS:I believe the very first foul is a red-card offence on its own. If youre training a young man will be when someone overruns the ball which Seamus does – be prepared when he participates for what could happen.
I dont have any doubt whatsoever that he had no intention of hurting Pieters but hes tackled together with his wrong foot and caught him around the crab with his claws. If the referee sees what we have seen, hed send him off. VAR recommended so that the thing was dealt with, that it did not meet with the threshold.
For the moment, the reality that he jumps right into McNeil like he does, the Army sees it since he is leaping at him Seamus just accepts it. I believe Seamus is thinking, nicely with everything I did at the first half and also exactly what Ive done nowI deserve to get sent . Credit to him, he just walks off.
INCIDENT: Towards the ending of the triumph of Newcastle, Scott McTominay caught Sean Longstaff around the leg with his claws. It was a yellow card to your Manchester United midfielder, although it led to Mike Dean being surrounded by players from both sides.
DERMOTS VERDICT: Correct decision.
DERMOT SAYS:There is minimal contact, it is a short distance and I do think he goes to pull away. He realises how near Sean Longstaff is also and him touches. If he wanted to go , he might have taken on, however, I feel that a yellow card is right.
