Poor discipline could be the sole”chink” at England’s chances of winning the Rugby World Cup, says former head coach Sir Clive Woodward.
Woodward led England to World Cup glory in 2003 and says that achievement can be emulated by them in Japan – if they could keep 15 guys on the pitch.
He considers some gamers'”track documents” could prove expensive.
Eddie Jones’ England play Tonga in their tournament in Sapporo next Sunday (11:15 BST).
They then meet the usa before rougher assessments against Argentina and France finish their group fittings.
“There are many advantages,” Woodward told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek on Sunday. “They’ve got this very strong team.
“Here is what I predict an X-factor team – but quite a number of the starting XV have a track record of dropping it into a game when under pressure.
“There’s been a great deal of focus on the principles regarding neck-high tackles. If you’re playing with Argentina and France , best teams, and get a guy sent off the odds of winning that game will be quite tough.
“You will need each and every player to perform under pressure and perform within the laws of the game.”
Afterwards hosts England were knocked out in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup australian Jones replaced Stuart Lancaster as head coach.
Woodward, who headed the side is convinced they’ll reach the final on 2 November but says they must set the pace in matches.
“Eddie came into the project believing English rugby is laborious and tough, as he’s called it,” said the 63-year-old.
“He’s built an England team about how he watched England playing previously. They’re tough and very competitive. The essential factor for me is they have got to perform with quick.
“It doesn’t matter just how physical and tough you are, if you perform gradually you are not going to acquire. If they could play in a true pace they have got every opportunity.”
