Ireland captain Rory Best is underappreciated, says Rob Kearney
Rob Kearney believes captain Rory Finest is the”glue” that holds Ireland collectively however a farewell for him and head coach Joe Schmidt is not essential against Wales on Saturday.
Greatest will retire in rugby after the World Cup in Japan and will play his final home game in the Aviva Stadium on Saturday against Wales.
Schmidt will also resign after the tournament following six successful years at the helm, in which he has overseen three Six Nations titles.
However, Kearney played down the importance of a send-off for the group.
“Obviously it is very important but it’s not in the forefront of the thoughts,” he explained.
“Performance is enormous for us and even if you scale back the operation, it’s putting it into cubes; the initial 10 minutes, the second 10 minutes, and so on.
“We really must ensure we’re shooting in any way cylinders for that first week, [of this tournament] so that this weekend is a huge step for us.
“And then you get to love and feel pleased with giving Joe and Rory the huge send-off.”
Best, who played his final match in May for Ulster, will get his 120th cap – which makes him the third-highest restricted player in Ireland’s history – supporting just Ronan O’Gara and Brian O’Driscoll.
“It’s huge, isn’t it? And occasionally I think that it will get a little helpless,” Kearney stated on Finest’s leadership ahead of Ireland’s final World Cup warm-up game.
“Some of the momentous victories we’ve had as a team have been below Rory. He is a pioneer, he’s the glue that brings the group.
“Again, he’s a guy who is training really well and I’m sure he’s quite eager to get out there and also show that he’s still hugely effective at generating big performancesat his ripe old age.”
Ireland returned to winning ways last weekend once they have been beaten by England 57-15 at Twickenham, edging out Wales 22-17 at Cardiff on Saturday.
Six days 24, before playing with hosts Japan schmidt’s unwanted face Scotland in their very first World Cup group stage game on September 22.
