Rugby World Cup: Rhys Carre ‘shaking and speechless’ after making Wales squad
Rhys Carre stated he had been”shaking and speechless” if he was told he’d left Wales’ World Cup squad.
The prop, who won his solitary cap throughout the weekend for his country, has been included in the 31-man set for the visit to Japan.
Carre, who proceeded to Saracens from Cardiff Blues over the summer, stated that he had been a”large bag of mixed feelings” after getting the call from Warren Gatland.
“I was as shocked as everyone else at the time,” Carre told Sky Sports of his call-up.
“I didn’t quite understand how to take it all in. I started shaking, I was simply speechless in the time – that I am now. It still has not sunk in, it has been a mad two days for me personally over the weekend. A large bag of mixed emotions.
“When I signed up for Saracens I was never expecting to be in a warm-up squad let alone to be going on the airplane. I am still attempting to take it all in day by day and keep my head down”
Carre says he came into Wales’ camp carrying more fat after enjoying a little too much than expected, but has lost.
“It helps when you come into camp heavier,” Carre said of the impressive weight reduction. “I came in carrying a little too much lumber, so I worked together with the [Strength and conditioning coaches] and the nutritionists to sort my diet out and sort out my plan on the area. I worked hard for 12 weeks and got to this place now.”
Another man who was not sure if he’d produce the squad was Leigh Halfpenny, whose issues with concussion saw him out.
“As time was moving on you sort of think’Just how long is that going to continue for?’ ,” said Halfpenny of his own time to the sidelines.
“Horrendous harm. One of the hardest to cope with because you do not know when it carries on for as long as it did when that end line is.
“You really do start to question what is going to happen. I just kept trying to do all I could to try and rest and attempt to get it over.
“Thankfully it got better and I was able to come back to the field, and so I was thrilled.”
Meanwhile, fly-half Dan Biggar states Wales’ form, that saw them elevated to the top of the World Rugby positions for 2 weeks last month, will count for nothing in Japan.
“It is about turning upward,” explained Biggar. “We’ve got a terrific squad on paper and we’ve got lots of experience and lots of accolades within the previous 12 or 18 weeks but it’s about fronting up and bringing in.
“I’m not quite sure England are likely to be too concerned about our listing earlier – or New Zealand or what it is – they’re likely to be worried about the here and now.
“That’s exactly what it has to be to us. We’ve had a very good 12 or 18 months constructing before the, however I think the squad that we’ve got now, we have got to go and send on a large stage”
