Sergey Kovalev anxious to receive recognition in Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight, says trainer Buddy McGirt
Sergey Kovalev has been”very worried” to receive recognition at the Saul Alvarez fight and will use skill, not superior power against’Canelo’, says trainer Buddy McGirt.
Even the WBO champion defends his belt against the celebrity, who’s bidding to be a world-title holder that is four-weight .
Kovalev and McGirt recently met to explore the clash with’Canelo’, and the renowned coach says that the Russian is very keen to pull off a career-defining win.
“I think that boxing needs a fight in this way,” McGirt told Sky Sports. “Kovalev needs a challenge, Canelo, he’s defeat everyone. I admire for what he’s doing, Canelo , leaping around 175. I truly respect that, it shows a true winner, and I just think that it’s going to be a excellent night of boxing.
“He [Kovalev] is extremely anxious. After he lost to Ward and [Eleider] Alvarez there was lots of negative things said about him, so I believe he is out to prove the critics wrong.”
Asked if Kovalev would like to be recognized among the planet’s elite, McGirt replied:”Yes, I think so. He has fought with and I just feel that he deserves it.
“He kept the light-heavyweight division exciting when it wasn’t exciting.”
‘Canelo’ is pushing his own borders as he completes his career’s weight class, but McGirt says Kovalev will not be reliant upon the dimensions and strength which overwhelmed Anthony Yarde in the stoppage triumph of last month.
“I’m not considering us becoming the larger, stronger guy. My aim is to be the better guy that night,” said McGirt. “His [Kovalev’s] boxing IQ is extremely underrated.
“Canelo is a hell of a fighter, so he’s very smart, his boxing IQ is large as well. I really don’t think, as much as physical-wise, I don’t think it’s that a lot of risk because of him.
“I am not considering electricity. That night, I’m looking at skill and like I said, I’m looking at being the best guy.
“Sergey’s experience is actually going to play a major role in this fight.”
