Liverpool penalty and Hamza Choudhury yellow right decisions – Ref Watch
Liverpool punishment and the yellow card for a tackle on Mohamed Salah of Hamza Choudhury were both appropriate conclusions, Dermot Gallagher has said about Ref Watch.
The former Premier League referee throw his expert eye on the weekends actions, in which VAR once again played its role, and gave his opinions on a few of the big conclusions…
INCIDENT: In the games final minutes, Liverpool had been awarded a penalty after Mark Albrighton captured the foot of Sadio Mane at the area, sending the forwards over. Referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to this place and the decision was confirmed by means of a VAR review. Win the match for Liverpool and james Milner stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
The VERDICT: Correct decision of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:We speak about it due to how Mane went , he did not go down too well, but I think its a foul and when you offer a filthy, you have to give a punishment. The issue we have is that we discuss minimal contact and going down theatrically, he does do so, but I really do think he was fouled.
INCIDENT: Only prior to the penalty, Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury hacked Mohamed Salah because he drove towards the box. Even though he hasnt suffered any damage while the area limped off choudhury has been given a yellow card.
Klopp said after the match:I stay here and should be only happy due to how the boys did this, but I cant get within the Choudhury yellow card. He must know. He perhaps was unfortunate with (Matt) Ritchie, but he must calm down. You cannot only opt for the man, a yellow card.
The VERDICT: Correct decision of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:I do not think he catches him with his boot. Its a yellow-card challenge and if you look at it, then he is caught by him more with the aspect of the leg. He is low, he has come a short space and Salah is moving away from him so it is not the rate and strength of hitting bloke directly on, so I think that its a card.
INCIDENT: There was yet another late VAR call in the London Stadium. Jordan Ayew scored in the 87th minute, for offside, but the linesman initially ruled it out. The conclusion went to VAR which showed Martin Kelly – who assisted the goal – and Ayew were both onside, overturning the call and awarding Crystal Palace that the goal.
DERMOTS VERDICT choice.
DERMOT SAYS:Its an awesome decision, since there were two. There is the very first one where Angelo Ogbonna retains Martin Kelly onside because he heads back it on. Then Ryan Fredericks retains Jordan Ayew onside.
People say to me concerning the time frame [of their VAR check], which was just two minutes, but you only have to check at it to see how tight of a telephone it is and they had to build it up. It is possible to see why theyve taken time and theyve got it correctly. Youd rather spend some time to get it right than look now and find it should have remained disallowed.
INCIDENT in the match, Crystal Palace were given a penalty after the ball struck Declan Rices arm at the region. Patrick van Aanholt converted to equalise for the people.
The VERDICT: Correct choice of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:It had been really close but his [Rices] hands are above his head and at the pre-season guidance thats what was mentioned – if you set your hands above your head, it is not a pure place.
You can observe his hands are way above his mind when he grips the ball and it was stated that referees would provide penalties for this and he also did. It was checked by VAR and given the OK.
INCIDENT: Everton shield Seamus Coleman was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. For jumping into Dwight McNeil at a high challenge, the very first foul was a struggle on the moment and Erik Pieters.
DERMOTS VERDICT: First was a yellowish.
DERMOT SAYS:I think that the first foul is a red-card offence by itself. If you are training a man will be when someone overruns the ball which Seamus does – be ready when he participates for what might happen.
I have no doubt whatsoever that he had no intention of hurting Pieters but hes tackled together with his wrong foot and grabbed him on the calf with his studs. Hed send off him, if the referee sees what we have seen. VAR urged so the thing was dealt with, that it did not meet with the threshold.
For the moment, the fact he jumps right into McNeil such as he does, the referee sees it since hes leaping at him Seamus just accepts it. I think Seamus is thinking, well with what I have done today and what I did in the first half I deserve to get sent off. Charge to him, he walks off
INCIDENT: Towards the end of Newcastles win, Scott McTominay caught Sean Longstaff on the leg. It directed to referee Mike Dean being besieged by players from both sides, but it was only a yellow card to the Manchester United midfielder.
The VERDICT decision of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:Theres minimal contact, it is a brief distance and I really do think he goes to pull away. He realises how close Sean Longstaff is also and him just touches. If he wanted to go , he could have carried on, however, I think a yellow card is right.
