Tyson Fury’s trainer Ben Davison has combined fighters and pundits in defending Rob McCracken contrary to criticism he place Anthony Joshua’s own life in danger during his defeat from Andy Ruiz Jr..
Brain injury charity Headway states it’s”shocking” that coach McCracken told 5 Live Boxing he”knew Joshua had been concussed” throughout his loss to Ruiz in June.
McCracken, 51, has stated it was not.
“I don’t think the individuals who have criticised Rob have some knowledge or experience of boxing,” Davison told BBC Sport.
“If a fighter goes I would envision that has some kind of concussive impact each time.
“If Rob would be to get pulled up and blamed or criticised afterward I need criticising overly because Tyson got knocked down against Deontay Wilder in around nine and 12 and I allowed it to carry on. So if he’s becoming entangled I want it also.”
The British Boxing Board of Control has backed McCracken.
Joshua was floored twice in round three and twice in round seven against Ruiz, that picked up both the WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles.
Throughout the struggle, Joshua asked McCracken involving rounds what round was next, and until the seventh, asked:”Why am I feeling like this?”
Headway states McCracken’s assertion that his charge fought concussed revealed the trainer’s”single priority was on winning the fight” rather than protecting Joshua out of”a potentially fatal harm”.
The organization also said concussion protocols in boxing”aren’t worth the paper they are written on”.
BBC Radio 5 Live boxing analyst Steve Bunce said:”That is an outrageous remark for any organisation to create about boxing, particularly in Britain, in which the British Boxing Board of Control are the top body when it comes to fighter care.
“They are constantly reviewing boxers. In my view, that is an unnecessary remark. Since it’s much too strong I am outraged by this.
“What happened here, McCracken simply picked the wrong word. He’s stated Joshua was stunned, and also even the term we so often use in boxing, gone. They all fall of concussion, a word. I believe he used the wrong word.”
In July, Argentine Hugo Alfredo Santillan and Russian Maxim Dadashev became the 11th and 12th fighters to perish as a result of injuries sustained in the ring within the past decade.
McCracken has let fighters continue after knockdowns previously, with Joshua recovering to prevent Wladimir Klitschko at 2017.
Wondering how boxing could survive if boxers were removed from bouts if they’re concussed, Dave Coldwell, who trained Tony Bellew and works with the likes of Anthony Fowler and Jordan Gill, said:”It’d be the conclusion of boxing.
“All combat sports, then it would be the end. This is the reason folks opt to box and others do not.
“Occasionally a fighter will come back and is not concussed and will inquire what around we are in as he’s that wrapped up in a struggle.
“There are times in which you believe someone wants pulling out then suddenly they move out in the next round and are fresh as a tug and pull it back.”
Head injury is a topic in athletics, with football, the two codes of cricket and rugby all encircle concussion protocols that are varied.
Former European bantamweight champion Spencer Oliver told BBC World Service:”Once I had my first European title defence I did not realise I had been concussed but I must have been.
“The doctor came in and asked me easy questions. I couldn’t for the life span of me figure out which day it had been. She stated if I got it wrong a second time I’d go to hospital. She asked me and I thought and got it right.”
Oliver, who had been placed in a coma after being injured in a struggle in 1998, added:”I have known Joshua since day one, once he has hurt he takes a few rounds [to recover]. So I know what Rob thought.
“He was clearly concussed, all of us saw that. However, if I had been in precisely the identical situation I am not sure I’d have pulled Joshua out.”
