Lewis Hamilton on the challenge of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc

Lewis Hamilton says he might need to work”twice as hard” to keep ahead of increasing F1 celebrities Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen and Leclerc, along with championship leader Hamilton, have proved this season’s front-running celebrities so far. Mercedes’ Hamilton along with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen have won two of the five races with Ferrari’s Leclerc winning another in his breakthrough success last Sunday.
Hamilton has been older than both 21-year-olds, 13 years and continues to be impressed by their progress.
“They are both doing a phenomenal job,” Hamilton told Sky Sports in Italy before the weekend’s race in Monza.
“It is interesting to see their travel since I have been there at the age in the earlier part of my livelihood and seeing with the trials and tribulations that you go through. I can empathise with what they are currently going through.
“I have to work twice as hard now to stay ahead of these as they are young and fresh and energised, and it’s tougher when you get older to remain as healthy, as driven and as sharp.”
Hamilton leads the world championship by a large 65-point margin with eight races and remains the standard-bearer of F1 although Leclerc and Verstappen are top the next generation of motorists of the sport.
The five-time winner insists”I frankly don’t even know the number of things I’ve” but says he keeps tabs on his own race finishing positions and”that is exactly what I try to maintain as large as you can”.
“I have no idea when and if or how the remainder of the tournament is going to go but I have to try and make sure I keep hitting this high level,” said the winner of eight of 2019’s hitherto 13 races.
Mercedes would be the defending champions of this Italian GP since the engine age began in 2014, with gone awry in the fastest circuit of F1. Winning a few of these races, Hamilton is also the Monza record holder with five victories overall.
But has Leclerc win for Ferrari at Belgium launched the home club as the favourites at Monza this weekend!
Sky F1’s Martin Brundle and Simon Lazenby evaluate that query and all the other big talking points going into the weekend in the movie above. Sunday’s race begins at 2.10pm live merely on Sky Sports F1.
