Lewis Hamilton on the challenge of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc

Lewis Hamilton says he will have to operate”twice as hard” to keep ahead of rising F1 stars Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc and verstappen, along with championship leader Hamilton, have proved this season’s front-running celebrities up to now. Mercedes’ Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen have won two of the five races with Ferrari’s Leclerc winning another in his breakthrough victory last Sunday.
Aged 34, Hamilton is older than both 21-year-olds 13 years and continues to be impressed with their own early-career progress.
“They are doing a marvelous job,” Hamilton told Sky Sports in Italy before this weekend’s race in Monza.
“It’s fascinating to see their travel since I’ve been there in that age in the earlier part of my livelihood and seeing the trials and tribulations you proceed through. With what they are going through, so I can empathise.
“I have to work twice as hard today to remain ahead of these because they’re young and fresh and energised, and it is tougher when you get older to stay as healthy, as pushed and as sharp.”
Even though Verstappen and Leclerc are contributing the sport’s next generation of youthful drivers, Hamilton stays F1’s standard-bearer and leads the world championship with a large margin with eight races left.
The five-time champion insists”I don’t know the number of things I’ve” but states he keeps tabs on his race ending positions and”that is what I try to keep as high as possible”.
“I don’t have any idea when and if or how the rest of the tournament is going to go but I must attempt to make sure I continue hitting the elevated level,” said the winner of eight of 2019’s hitherto 13 races.
Mercedes would be the defending five-time champions of the Italian GP since the current engine era started in 2014 having gone awry in F1’s fastest circuit. Winning four of those races, Hamilton is the joint Monza album holder with five victories.
